Strategic technology research for the ATI

SITA Lab is SITA's strategic technology research arm. Our role is to stimulate technological innovation in the air transport industry (ATI) and bring emerging technologies into SITA's portfolio. We innovate in collaboration with airlines, airports, and technology specialists globally.

Having some of the most experienced and dynamic developers in the air transport industry (ATI), SITA Lab is heavily investing in emerging technologies and investigating the enhancements they can bring to passenger and crew journeys. From Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things to blockchain and biometrics, we are stretching the abilities of these technologies to their limit to find new cutting-edge solutions to some of the industry’s biggest challenges.

New innovations and ideas arising from internal discussions as well as external requests are developed and market-tested within a secure environment.

SITA Lab has helped create many world-firsts in air travel - from first exit check using just facial biometrics to the use of intelligence machines such as KATE, our autonomous check-in kiosk.

Intelligent machines

Using artificial intelligence has the potential to radically change what has really been a set of airport processes that have been manual and have not changed much over the past few decades. Using artificial intelligence will allow these processes or steps in the journey to be automated using intelligent machines without having to stop to interact with a person first, enabling people to focus on more complex or personal tasks. 

KATE, the intelligent kiosk

Fluctuating passenger flows present a challenge in airports. What if kiosks could move themselves? KATE will autonomously move to congested areas as needed. 


Leo, SITA's baggage robot

Leo, a fully autonomous, self-propelling baggage robot has the capacity to check in, print bag tags and transport up to two suitcases with a maximum weight of 32kg.

Tracking baggage

Technology will be instrumental in further reductions in mishandled baggage rates in the future. SITA Lab is exploring new technologies that will allow airlines, airports and ground handlers to track baggage every step of the way, using both existing and brand-new technologies. This initiative also looks at helping airlines meet IATA Resolution 753 that requires by 2018 airlines keep track of every item of baggage from start to finish.

Tracking every item of baggage from start to finish is the goal.  This initiative is key to increasing passenger satisfaction while at the same time reducing baggage fraud.

Tracking bags to your doorstep

SITA Lab has trialed a new solution which allowed an airline to hand over mishandled bags to its courier and seamlessly track and confirm the delivery of those bags.

Identity management of the future

Identity management is another key challenge for the industry and an important initiative for SITA, not only in terms of providing increased security but streamlining the immigration process globally.

Leveraging SITA’s existing self-service technology together with the use of mobile and biometrics technologies, SITA Lab is working with governments, airlines and airports to speed up identity checks for passengers. This is a new world where your face will be your passport.

This user-friendly, biometric, self-boarding program is designed to deliver a secure and seamless passenger experience. Checks are sent quickly to the airline’s systems.

SITA exploring a new world of mixed reality
